Eye-Fi Direct Mode Coming Sometime in 2011
Eye-Fi, for those of you who don’t know, is a memory card that can connect to a WiFi networks and upload it’s pictures for you. That’s right you can download the images from your camera without plugging it in. Sounds great, yeah but it gets better. Eye-Fi has announced that sometime this year they are going to update all the Eye-Fi X2 cards with a mode they are calling Direct Mode.
Direct Mode allows you to create wireless access point from your Eye-Fi card, which a device like a computer, iphone, ipad, or what have you, can connect to. Once connected you can download the images directly to that device! What’s so great about this is previously you needed a local wireless network, which you had to configure, in order to make any transfers. This means you can take a picture with your nice DSLR or Point and Shoot camera and then upload it to Facebook or Email it right from your mobile device. Pretty Slick huh!
These Eye-Fi cards are pretty affordable running about $50, which isn’t bad for what it can do.
