Discussion – Google Loosing Emails of 150,000 Members! Does…
Well it’s all over the web this weekend, Google has lost 150,000 users’ emails. This is not the first time Google has lost member’s data, and I’m sure it’s not going to be the last. So the question on my mind does this discourage user from using Gmail? Second, does it discourage users from solely depending on Webmail rather than backing up their messages using a mail client?
I have been using Apple Mail to handle all my email for some time now. I know a lot of people use mail clients, but I also now a lot that have never used them and are big fans of using webmail only. So login to the Disqus commenting system and let me know what you think. What are your thoughts on Google loosing this data and how is that going to change the way you handle your email in the future?

It seems Google has apologized for the accounts that were reset, and they say you will receive your data back. At least that is what this Mashable article is saying.

FYI Lifehacker has a good article on how to backup your email. http://lifehacker.com/#!5772138/gmail-glitch-wipes-out-archives-from-150000-accounts-so-back-yours-up-already
I think something like this is an inevitable risk of using the technology. Not to mention, G-mail is a free service. If it were a paid service… most likely backups of the accounts would always be created, and if they lost the data, it would be on their hands. I wonder how much mail the USPS looses annually?
That’s a good question concerning the USPS. I wonder however if we will see more users start to use mail clients that automatically download your emails for you now that Google has had more than one screw up.
I am not an avid user of the gmail account… I just use it sparingly for referring adsense…
Getting hacked is something you just cannot avoid as no system is safe, but the host losing the data is really alarming….thanks for the info…
This kind of thing doesn’t really bother me… I normally download my email and backup anything important. Gmail is a free service and occasionally things don’t go to plan.
You know, I never understood why others use Gmail (or any other online email service) as their primary contact or for important messages/documents. I set up my personal email on computer software.
